[ Cpt. Roland Locke | Captain's Office | Crew Module | Augustus Station] Attn: Union Personnel"Station Commander's Log, Earth Date June 1st, 2419, Work on fitting the station with the new command module, research module, and the civilian module is at last drawing to a close. I must admit I am glad to finally get this over with. I must say that with the drama of the reconfiguration of this Station has been trying on not just me and the Union, but I can't imagine it's been any easier on the engineers and station personnel doing the job. I get that the destruction of certain areas of the station, the reconfiguration of areas of it, has left a bitter taste in a lot of people's mouths. If I were honest with myself, I would not be able to say I was altogether fine with this, but my duty doesn't change. Hopefully, as we draw the construction to a close the drama too will come to more of an unpleasant simmer so we can get on with our jobs. At least I hope we can get on with our work. On another note, in the next hour or so I'm expecting the first of the transports bringing in the new full term station crew. I spent most of last night going through the personnel files and it looks like I'm being sent some decent crew, but it's a Union crew, so I don't know what else I would expect. At the very least their files look good enough. End Log" With a yawn and then a grunt Roland Locke stretched in his chair, his back giving several loud cracks. He felt like he had been hit by a truck. Even though he had given up the harder liquor and had never gotten into beers or malt liquors, he did enough damage with wine alone. It didn't take an expert to point out that he did overdo it far too often for his own good. Not to say he was overly hungover, but he was enough so that he was on his third pain pill and nursing a glass of blue colored sports drink, trying to hydrate enough to get over a nagging migraine in the back of his skull. With another grunt he heaved himself out of his office chair and stretched again, his back and shoulders giving a few satisfying cracks and pops. Massaging his right shoulder he moved to his office's matter synthesizer and tapped in a few keys. In a twinkling of light, a steaming cup of coffee appeared in the tray. Usually, he preferred a real cup of coffee, only using the synthesizer to create the water and the roasted coffee beans, grinding the beans himself and then using a drip coffee pot. But he didn't really have the time to do anything like that, so it meant premade coffee, which wasn't as terrible as instant coffee. He snatched the data pad off his desk and headed out of his office. With coffee in hand, he made his way from his office toward the Union Personnel docking port on the Crew Module. Though the station was massive, roughly 7.5 km in length, it was not an overly long walk from his office to the docking port. He sipped at the piping hot liquid as he walked and looked over the datapad. The passenger manifest of the shuttle and the personnel files were at his fingertips, but he really just let his eyes glance over them, taking note of a few key details. When he arrived at the docking port he was met by a small group of personnel, most of them preparing to board the shuttle after the passengers had disembarked. Rather than have any real turn around time they would just swap out shuttle pilots and refuel, a process that took almost no time at all. Roland gave them a curt nod and stood to wait for the docking lights to change, it would not be long now.

[ Dr. Saranya Davenport | Shuttle | Docking Port | Crew Module | Augustus Station] Attn: Absinthe & Union Personnel
A small smile played on Saranya's lips as she stood before the door, the last barrier from what was going to be her new home for the foreseeable future. For once, she was stepping outside of her comfort zone. When she had spoken to her parents about shifting from her assignments aboard ships and going farther out than she had ever been before, it was met with cautious approval. Her father was naturally worried for her well-being, and her mother wasn't sure about how big of a hindrance their Drazalyte heritage was going to be out here. But the point she felt was the chance of discovery, adventure, and a change. Surely she would have something from her father's human gifts. If nothing else, she was at least at the advantage of getting to meet just about everyone that came to the station, what with her being the station's doctor and one of the primary medical staff.
People watching was one of her favourite pastimes.
When the doors parted, with the pressure clearing and matching the station's, she grinned as she stepped out onto the main floor, and she saw a man in the blue uniform belonging to command, she recognized him from the briefing on the way about the commander for the Union on board the station. Walking up to him, she found herself craning her neck to look him in the eye. He had at least ten inches on her in height. Extending her hand out to him, she smiled and said, “Captain Locke, Doctor Saranya Davenport, reporting for duty.” her London accent was still strong and clear.

[ Cpt. Roland Locke | Crew Docking Port | Crew Module | Augustus Station] Attn: Triage Slipping the datapad under the arm holding his coffee, Roland extended his free hand to the new member of his staff. She was young, younger than even her personnel file gave him the impression of. In all honesty, it was almost a terrifying thought that she was one of his more qualified medical personnel. His crew was still being transferred in and out so it wasn't like there was much firm ground for him to stand on and be very picky about who he wanted. He was lucky to get who could. He could only hope when the dust settled he had enough trained people to run the station, them being of an age he was comfortable with was a luxury he didn't have any right to be too choosy about. Not that he would have let any of his doubts show on his face. No, he was a professional about such matters and if she had impressed the Union enough to get the spot, then she was good enough by this book. " Welcome to Augustus Station," he said doing his best to seem nonchalant and at ease. It was important to keep life on board a station less strict than life on starships, even if it was a bit odd for him. " Have you been briefed on your assignment yet or did they drop you into my lap with no preamble?" He gave her a faint smile. Too often it seemed like all people got was just the transfer orders and no debrief on the new assignment.

Idly, Saranya wondered if Roland was aware of her Drazalyte heritage, based on his reaction to her youthfulness and drastically reduced stature compared to humans. But she couldn't quite get a very good read on him save that he was trying very hard not to show any actual obvious reaction to her appearance. But the girl was very curious, so she deliberately allowed her face and hair to shift in colour, concentrating on shifting her appearance back to a Drazalyte in their natural forms, before shifting back to her human and more comfortable features, all while they shook hands.
“Thank you,” said Saranya, “I have, indeed, though, to be fair, a refresher on what's what wouldn't hurt at all, I think. I was positively tickled pink that they accepted my request for reassignment here.” She glanced around her immediate surroundings and then back at the man, smiling. “I can safely venture that I will be tending to any and all injuries that may occur while on the station, perhaps work alongside medical researchers and biologists when we encounter any foreign physical material. Am I wrong?”

[ Cpt. Roland Locke | Crew Docking Port | Crew Module | Augustus Station] Attn: Triage It wasn't so much that Roland didn't react to her shifting features as it was that he had seen quite a bit of odd things in his long career. A girl with skin that seemed to change in shade and features was odd, but not so much that it would catch him off guard. Instead, he made a mental note of it, tucking it away in his brain, instead focussing on her question. " Well, Augustus Station is planned to act as a sort of hub for the trade in the area. Thus our medical staff will act as the basic medical aid for not just the crew and civilian personnel on the station, but they'll help out the ships that dock here," Roland explained flatly. He sounded almost tired as he spoke, clearly, the coffee had yet to really kick in. " For the most part, the research teams and the main medical teams will only interact in the same way the rest of the crew and the medical team interact. I don't expect you'll be called upon too often to go into the less than safe areas of the station." He gave her a subtle, yet reassuring smile. " No need to worry about that."

Not so much as an eye twitch. Saranya wasn't sure whether to be disappointed or impressed that he was unreactive as a rock. She herself offered little in the way of emotion beyond her polite smile and friendly demeanour. She supposed it was simply early days, and there was plenty of time to get to know people in a more relaxed environment later on. For now, it was all business.
She nodded as he spoke, paying attention to what he said and revealed about the station and the expectations. “Oh I wasn't worried,” said Saranya, “rather, I would like to state that I'd be happy to help with exploration and research...it may not be my primary field of expertise, but...you are aware that I'm a Drazalyte? You can put that to good use.” She beamed happily at him, then dropped her smile when she realized she may have implied that the captain hadn't even read her file. Especially after her open display of shifting her skin colour. “I meant no offense by what I said.” She offered lamely.

[ Cpt. Roland Locke | Crew Docking Port | Crew Module | Augustus Station] Attn: Triage As she spoke Roland considered her. Drazalyte? That did explain how someone so young had gotten so far in the Union. He was vaguely familiar with the species, though he could not be certain he had ever had much direct contact with one. There were a lot of species in the Union and at times it proved to be near impossible to keep track of which species one had actually worked with and which one had only read about. " I wouldn't focus too much on the restricted areas of the station. For now, they aren't exactly the safest places. It looks like the station at one time had an arboretum that took over most of the station. We've detected quite a bit of life, though it's difficult to get any real detailed scans of the nature of any of the lifeforms," Roland said thoughtfully. He had gone to the restricted areas a number of times, but personally, he found the more cleaned up areas preferable to be in. At least there he wasn't likely to get his head chewed off by pissed off researchers who were mad about important areas for research being damaged by the expansion done by the Union. It hadn't been his idea, but as the highest ranking Union officer on the station, he did get an earful about it. " If you're really gung-ho about it, you can see the head researcher about taking doing some work there. Kharris may be a pain in the ass, but I'm certain you won't have too much trouble... Have you worked with many Moclans?"

Saranya smiled, feeling a little relieved that the captain seemed mild mannered enough, or at least maintained his cool at all times. She perked up at the details provided by him, and then she outright grinned when he suggested speaking to the head researcher, who it turned out was a Moclan. He was of the opinion that this Kharris would be...difficult. But she was too elated by the fact that she could help with the research. Especially in the early stages. Of course once there was a more substantial crowd, she supposed that she'd be a little busier in the medical bay.
“I have worked with a fair share of Moclans in my short time, yes,” said Saranya, “on the two cruisers I served, I've interacted with Moclans. I find them to be mostly amenable and calm. Very focused and dedicated to their work would be the word I'd use to describe them as a whole.”
She rose up on her tip toe and fell back down, “I take it Mr. Kharris would be no exception to this?”
She glanced back towards the rest of the crew still disembarking, and then looked back at Roland, “I'm so sorry, Captain, if I'm taking up more of your time than I should. Perhaps I'd best get settled in first, then I'll see about talking to the Head Researcher? Permission to be dismissed?”
She bent down and picked up her luggage, looking expectantly at the captain.

[ Cpt. Roland Locke | Crew Docking Port | Crew Module | Augustus Station] Attn: Triage If there was one thing that Roland had learned to not rely on in his time in the Union, it was his estimation of how experienced someone was based simply off of their appearance. Of course, he still had his own biases thanks to being human, but he was constantly amazed by such young looking people having a good deal of experience within the Union, not to mention specific life experience. " I have, to put it bluntly, found Kharris to be difficult to work with," Roland said with a little bit of a smile, thinking of the first time he spoke with Kharris about the current status of the station. " Kharris is not afraid to voice his opinion and doesn't always put it in the most, shall we say, diplomatic way. But he is good at his job and he has spent more time on the Station than any member of the Union, he was one of the first researchers to board the station and if you listen to him, he's gonna outlast all of us." Again that faint smile. "You'll need to see the quartermaster office to get quarters, but more than likely they'll get you squared away in no time at all. For now our medical department, like most of our departments, is seriously undermanned, so I doubt you'll get nearly as much time to do anything outside of medical for a little bit. We're still waiting on a Chief Medical Officer to be transferred in," Roland replied. He was trying to think of anything else he needed to tell her, but when nothing else came to mind he simply added, " permission granted."

“Thank you, sir.” said Saranya happily, “I do look forward to what the next day brings. Good day.”
She turned and head towards the next corridor, considering all that the captain had told her. As busy as she might find herself to be, the girl was determined to find time to speak with Kharris, if nothing other than to make his acquaintance. He sounded like a driven and focused person, and she would like to see just how "difficult" the Moclan actually was. As she walked, she couldn't help the smile on her face. She was finally on a new adventure of discovery and realization.
And maybe, just maybe, she could break the limitations of her Drazalyte heritage.
