[ Lt. Kharris | Overgrown Storage Bay C7 | Restricted Zone | Augustus Station ] attn: Triage , drei " Look, I don't care what your orders are until I have done my work in here you can't just come in here and clash and burn all the plant life here. The Union has enough places to store their shit," Kharris said with a scowl, his eyes staring daggers into the man before him. It didn't matter to him that the foreman was just there on a standard work order or that the Storage Bay had been on the schedule to be cleared for the last couple of weeks. He was making his stand here. He'd been shoved around enough, forced to work in a big damn hurry and as a result forced to work sloppy. He didn't like to have to work sloppy and he especially didn't like having to rush so that someone could bulldoze the area for something less culturally or historically significant. "You'll have to take it up with the Station Management. For now, I've got a job to do," the foreman replied. He'd been putting up with Kharris standing in the path of the work ever since he'd arrived on the station and honestly he'd had enough. "I will and you're not gonna do that job, I don't care. Fuck off," Kharris was just as done as the foreman was and this time he was going to hold his ground. He'd seen enough of the areas he knew he could have gotten a fuckton more information from getting destroyed all in the name of some vague idea of progress. He was finished with all of that. The majority of the construction was done and he was not about to let more of his research go down the shitter because of some stupidity some Admiral somewhere thought. If they had an issue with it they could bring it to him directly. In the meantime, he was standing his ground. " Are you really going to put your career on the line for one Cargo Bay?" the foreman asked with a look of skepticism. " And what happens after it's this Cargo Bay? How long until you just bulldoze your way through the whole station and tear down everything we stand even the slightest chance of learning anything from?" Kharris replied, his blood boiling, which was rare for a Moclan, but he was especially pissed about this. " That's not gonna happen. The majority of the restricted area has been set aside for your little science research shit. They just want to clear out enough space for storage," the foreman replied. " You'll forgive me if I do not take your word for that. Less than three months ago I was told that the entirety of the restricted sections of the station would be left alone. And now that does not seem to be the case," Kharris replied angrily. " You've had two weeks to make a complaint, why are you getting in the way now?" the foreman asked. His temper was flaring as well and honestly, he did not need this. " Maybe I felt like being an asshole about it," Kharris replied. " Or maybe I have a fucking job to do and I didn't notice the bulletin until yesterday and by then your fucktards were too far convinced you needed another cargo bay to listen to reason." " You know what, fuck it, I'll give the men the day off, but I will be submitting a report," the foreman said throwing up his hands and turning to walk away. For a moment Kharris was tempted to say something more, but really he knew he'd basically won for now and that's all he wanted. With a sigh he turned back to his kit and pulled out a small hand scanner. He wanted to get a detailed scan of the cargo bay before the rest of the research team got there now that he knew they'd at the very least have a day to go over the findings there.

[ Dr. Saranya Davenport | Overgrown Storage Bay C7 | Restricted Zone | Augustus Station] Attn: Absinthe & drei
Squaring away everything (which wasn't much to begin with) and getting the immediate lay of the land around her quarters to the medical bay took less time than Saranya anticipated, which prompted her to have a look around a little further, eventually getting directions to Kharris' whereabouts. She decided to meet the Moclan, despite the captain's warnings. Still, she wasn't so naïve to believe there was no context to the man's warnings, and he was soon vindicated when the young Drazalyte came across Kharris in a rather heated disagreement with someone, and expletives were flying every which way. The Moclans Saranya knew didn't use contractions in their dialogues, nor did they ever indulge in human slang and language, but she supposed Kharris probably spent time on Earth or with humans a lot. Enough to absorb their culture and ways. When the conversation ended (mercifully), the tiny brunette slowly approached, her uniform a clear indicator of her rank and position. “Is everything all right?” said Saranya, offering a tentative smile to the Moclan, “I couldn't help overhearing the tail end of that conversation. I'm Doctor Saranya Davenport, Drazalyte. I was told you're who I have to see if I want to volunteer my assistance in any research going on here...” she gave Kharris a look, “...but if this is a bad time, and you're busy, I can always come back later.”

[ Lt. Kharris | Overgrown Storage Bay C7 | Restricted Zone | Augustus Station ] attn: Triage , drei A bad time? Kharris honestly couldn't think of a good time for much of anything since the Union too control of the station and decided to start cutting into it. " If you're here to volunteer to do work, I can put you to work. If you're here to volunteer to sightsee, then I don't have much use for you," Kharris said, not even bothering to look up from his hand scanner. His tone was gruffer than most Moclans would get. Years of working with a massive variety of species and ground away the polite detached attitude most Moclans had from him, not that he was like most of them to begin with. He'd gone to college on Earth after all and had a long-standing hatred for polluting the natural world. He was unlike most of his species in a number of ways. He was tall and more thin, angular in the face and body type. He had sharp eyes and a rapier-like tongue. He also had taken up the habit of cussing to add punctuation to his sentences when he needed it. In addition, his tone would more often expose his emotional state. Such traits were frowned upon on Moclus, but as he didn't give a shit what his own people thought of him anymore, he indulged them. Even if it did confuse those who were just meeting him and expected a run of the mill Moclan to greet them. He was anything but that.

He didn't even bother to look up at her, though Saranya's enthusiasm and friendliness didn't falter at this, nor show, not that it mattered since he wasn't looking at her. “Volunteer to work, most certainly. Sightseeing would come with the work here in this case, I'd say. While I'm a doctor, and I'll probably get called away when medical attention is required, I can definitely rotate my schedule here whenever I'm free to help out. It sounds like you're understaffed and overworked as it is.”She tried to be as friendly and approachable as possible, as she wanted to make a friend here rather than a potential enemy, “In fact, I could start right now, seeing as there isn't much crew or civilians around, I won't be as free as I am presently. What is that that you're working on? Anything I could do to make it easier for you?” She gave him a big beam of a smile.

[ Lt. Kharris | Overgrown Storage Bay C7 | Restricted Zone | Augustus Station ] attn: Triage , drei It was not so much that the sound of her voice was annoying to Kharris, it was just how darn happy and helpful she sounded. He had gotten far too used to arguing and fighting with fucktards at every level over the past several years. The constant grind had done away with any softness or non-sharp edges remaining, leaving him overtly hostile at a moments notice. " Medical personnel volunteering for Research duty?" he could not help but raise an eyebrow and actually turn to look at her at that point. She was not overly impressive, but one didn't need to be overly impressive to be useful when it came to excavating areas delicately, in fact, it was often better that people weren't the impressive looking sort. " If you want to work, I can put you to work." He said tucking his scanner into his hip holster. " We're excavating this chamber right now. No clue what it's original function was yet, but we are on a time crunch. For some stupid reason the Union seems to think this would be a good room to turn into cargo storage, so we need to learn what we can while we can." He paused and considered her for a second. " You ever work at an excavation site before?"

[ Lt. Squawk McCall | Overgrown Storage Bay C7 | Restricted Zone | Augustus Station ]
Squawk had quite a time with the dock crew - they really enjoyed the key chains and the cookies. They appreciated his fancy luggage the most, as they did not need to transport all that stuff themselves. They were disappointed it was not going to be standard issue for all cargo. They also appreciated that everything had already gone through customs.
Squawk McCall had gone to the quartermaster and had himself and his belongings situated. He would unpack everything later. The computer indicated that Lt. Kharris, the person in charge of the Science department, was in what was to be a storage bay.
Squawk thought that was fortunate as he might need to put some things in just such a bay. He may have brought too many cabbages. He will just have to make a lot of coleslaw and sauerkraut. Perhaps, some kimchi.
When he reached the area designated as a storage bay, he realized it was one of the overgrown chambers of the old station and not part of the new additions.
When he entered, he saw the doctor he saw leaving the docking port earlier and a person who must be Lt. Kharris. He was glad not to see any tree-like crewmen uprooted or cut down, dead on the ground. The doctor must not be here on a medical emergency, either.
He paused and realized perhaps he should not have brought the crate for storage. The studs on his nose glowed and the crate independently went off, presumably to go back to Squawk's room.
"I'm Lt. Squawk McCall. I've technically asked for a research posting but I'll be serving as a nurse while those positions are being filled." Squawk said when he got in "I heard the research team was being cut down and I came in case someone needed a branch reattached. But I see now that I misinterpreted that." Squawk set down the medical bag he had brought with him on what appeared to be a relatively clean, though mossy surface.
"Oh, did I interrupt something?" Squawk said "You know, this chamber has some really interesting features. I especially liked the details near the north wall. I'm not sure if they're pictographs or if they're just ... carved murals - it might be a lunch menu, who knows - but it's really neat. It's right over, uh..." Squawk looked around in search of that feature but did not seem to find it where he thought it would be.
"Where that machine is. Is that a bulldozer? What a fascinating bulldozer!" Squawk exclaimed, trying to be positive about things "Well, I guess it was easier to see in the virtual environment recreation, anyway. Maybe not the biggest loss!"
Squawk suddenly recalled that he had made those surveys and scans in secret and he was not supposed to be exploring the place back then. He did not remember Lt. Kharris, but it's possible he arrived around the same time Squawk, as Huey Guzman, was just leaving. In any case, he'd probably have gotten the briefing on his not so secret identity as not-Huey Guzman, cook. He wasn't sure if the Union just thought he was hiding or if the Union guessed that he was also doing unauthorized exploration. In any case, he used to actively evade other people exploring the station.
He wondered how much of the station had been... re-purposed beyond study. His secret exploration and early scans might be the only data left of those now disturbed areas. At the very least, he had preserved the context of a lot of artifacts that must have now since been moved. They could refer back to them, if they did not document things before destroying things. Perhaps, they could compare their catalogue to Squawk's virtual catalogue.
Squawk assumed that the researchers of the Union would preserve data before destroying anything if they had to destroy it at all. After all, an archaeologist is an archaeologist. But not everyone is an archaeologist. Especially not when corporations are involved. They might have bulldozed things without thought to preservation of data!
"I mean, I guess if you haven't taken scans of this chamber already before the bulldozer you can have my -" Squawk said "uh, files. That is, I know I shouldn't have them, but I do. From before. also I have some notes. Fortunately, only a small amount of my penmanship resembles chicken scratch."
Squawk did document a lot of his exploration. Maytalon spatial scanning and virtualization technology was very advanced and Squawk wondered if he could have captured information Union technology did not. Due to when he took them, he wondered if he was able to capture data Union scientists now could not due to their destruction. They can compare data. For example, his notes would point out that a broken tablet near them had been moved three feet from where it was left by whoever dwelt in the station originally.
Good thing Maytalon and Union holographic technology were not incompatible. His beak only looked transparent and made out of light because he thought it looked cool. Had it been turned on, he would have willed his beak to look more solid and realistic so as to reassure Lt. Kharris that whatever scans he had would not be lacking in details when simulated.
He also had video documentation as he was very big into "vlogging" at that time.
"So, um, yes, I have worked at an excavation site before!" Squawk said, answering a question asked of someone else. A little impolite, but being too polite would have reminded him too much of work back home. He didn't say "This one!"
"Sorry, I couldn't help but overhear things," Squawk explained "I have very keen senses. Yes, I absolutely have ears."

[ Dr. Saranya Davenport | Overgrown Storage Bay C7 | Restricted Zone | Augustus Station] Attn: Absinthe & drei
He'd finally looked at her, and didn't seem too impressed, but Saranya could never tell with Moclans. They always seemed to look the same no matter how they felt inside. But either way, he at least accepted her offer and didn't sound more annoyed than he already was on account of the foreman earlier. When he asked about her experience with working at an excavation site prior, she took a breath and started, “Well, I have...”That was as far as she got when a newcomer jumped in on their conversation, in the form of Squawk McCall. She smiled at him and was about to speak, her lips parting, but the man went right over her, so she just smiled patiently and let him go on. When he asked if he was interrupting something, she managed a “Not really...” before she was overridden again. The Drazalyte stared at the man with wide eyes. He seemed to know a lot about the place. She couldn't even answer him that it was in fact a bulldozer, because by jove, he never stopped talking once he was on a roll, that was for sure. Though why was he being adamant to reassure them that he had ears? “N-nice to meet you, Mr. McCall.” said Saranya, “Yes, those ears look fine.”She felt slightly agitated by his frenetic energy, and her skin colour shifted into an iridescent shade for a while before she managed to regain control and restore it to a human appearance. Turning back to Kharris, she said to him, “I've had only the most basic training on working at an excavation site, but I'm quite handy at the fundamentals of it all.”

[ Lt. Kharris | Overgrown Storage Bay C7 | Restricted Zone | Augustus Station ] attn: Triage , drei Looking at the two of them, the small one and the talkative one, he knew he was in trouble. It seemed like either his new team had commitments to medical or was outright members of medical that was just helping out because of some sense of boredom or desire to see more of the station. It was not ideal, not in any sense of the word. " The bulldozer will be being moved very soon," Kharris said flatly. " And hopefully we can be left to work in peace after that, but knowing the way the Union is running things, I doubt it." There was more than a degree of frustration in his voice, far more emotion than a normal Moclan. " So, for now, we're going to work as best as we can. I need scans done of the whole room and detailed photographs taken of any markings on the plants or walls that do not look like they were the result of natural circumstances. If there is any doubt scan it and photograph it. We want to get as much of a thorough record of this room in its current condition. Then we can start to think about clearing some debris and seeing what's beneath." When he gave his orders his voice calmed. He seemed a bit less combative as if he shifted right into his element. This he loved to do, it was dealing with the Union breathing down his neck and pushing him to work faster that really got under his skin. " Since you," he gestured to Squawk, " seem to have some experience, I want you," he gestured to Saranya, " to work directly with him. I need to get in touch with someone from station management to get this damn bulldozer out of here." His tone shifted the moment he mentioned station management. That was not a conversation he was looking forward to. He'd had a number of fights with the Captain already and it seemed like that was not about to change. " Any Questions?"

As Kharris gave his instructions, Saranya's scanner appeared in her hand and she held it up, looking at the Moclan with a happy smile, ready to get going. She turned to look at Squawk and grinned. At least he'll hold the conversation for the both of them, while she did her scans. “No questions, sir.” said the girl, though she was equal in rank with him, she deferred to him out of respect to his seniority in this field of expertise. “I'll get started right away.” She turned to Squawk and said, “Hi! I'm Doctor Saranya Davenport! Since you're familiar with this, could you tell me what to do first?”

[ Lt. Squawk McCall| Overgrown Storage Bay C7 | Restricted Zone | Augustus Station ] attn: Triage Absinthe As soon as he took a breath, he realized the doctor had been trying to talk. He was used to talking and so, talked. He wondered if the Doctor believed in apologetic brownies. Squawk did wonder why the only people from Science division were assigned to medical. While he had asked to be given a non-medical assignment, he assumed the Union was just taking advantage of the training he had. But he remembered what sort of mysteries old archaeological sites sometimes had, especially ones that were space stations orbiting in space. He did not need to have seen the amount of Old Earth science fiction shows he had to know that at any point, they could open a door and a team could be sprayed with an unknown toxic spore or gas or virus and need medical attention. Or there could be some sort of mind download! He hoped nobody turned into newts, as he remembered was depicted in an old 23rd century show. He did not know if humans could indeed turn into lizards and back, but the program seemed to think so. " Yes," Squawk answered the Science chief, finally, " I have a question. Would you like a comparison of the archaeological landscape reconstruction based on some old scans I, uh, have and the scans we'd otherwise have to make do now because of the damage? I think that could help convince the Union of forming a protocol for this sort of expansion into the station." " For example, if they could at least give our team a schedule for demolition and construction, we could suggest we be allowed to scan and photograph those areas first." Squawk said " If we can't study them in situ, we could at least study scans of the place before they destroy any of it." " Doctor," Squawk said to the fascinatingly flashily flushed and flustered physician " Would you agree that at the very least, a science team should be allowed to breach and survey unexplored areas of the station *first* to do a quick sweep as well as a medical scan? We don't know what potential pathogens and toxins might be lurking in these old, unopened spaces. I know plenty of supposedly cursed tombs on my home planet were merely full of leeched mercury and lead and unleashed mold spores. If construction people understand anything, it's 'safety first!' I propose we encourage that. I bet you can write a very scary health and safety advisory! Get them in a hurry not to hurry, maybe." " Oh, also," Squawk coughed and turned on his beak set to filter particulates " Maybe we should do a medical sweep, too. And let's not disturb any more artifacts until we've documented them. Their context is as important as their existence." Squawk reached into his kit, which was now obviously not set on anything movable, and got his Science scanner. He should bring his recording drone(s) next time. And some releases to sign for his vlog.
